Schloss Trauttmansdorff and its gardens
A must for every holiday in Meran
The gardens of Castle Trauttmansdorff in Meran are among the most beautiful places in South Tyrol. The gently sloping terrain of this botanical garden, opened only in the year 2011, covers 12 acres with seven kilometers of trails and a considerable difference in altitude of 100 metres for gardens and parks. In the 1840s, Count Trauttmansdorff had rebuilt the ruined castle of his ancestors and turned it into a castle of neo-Gothic style, very popular at that time. By the way this example was followed thereafter by many other castle owners in South Tyrol, where the stately building became a model on the Eastern edge of Meran.
Sissi’s trail
Schloss Trauttmansdorff was made famous by the visits of Empress Elisabeth of Austria during her spa stays in Meran. As 1870 her daughter Marie Valerie, travelling with her, recovered from a disease a few weeks after their arrival, the reputation of Meran as spa town grew at a stroke. 19 years later Empress “Sissi” came back again in the romantic castle with its wonderful park and back again she went into raptures over the wonderful atmosphere. Today you can go from the promenade in Meran along “Sissi’s path” to this botanical garden following the trails of the Empress.
